Measuring a diamond – 4 Cs
There are four major categories that are used to rate a diamond:
- Cut – This describes the diamond's proportions and finish. A well-cut diamond will reflect more brilliance when a person views the diamond with proper lighting.
- Clarity – This describes the diamond's external and internal flaws. These flaws can be scratches or inclusions (flaws that appear inside the diamond itself). There are several clarity ratings from Flawless (no blemishes or inclusions) to Included (internal flaws that are visible to the naked eye). Too many flaws affect the diamond's brilliance.
- Color – This describes the color of the diamond, which ranges from white to yellow. A colorless diamond is rated the highest.
- Carat – This describes the weight of the diamond. While the technical weight is a factor in determining the diamond's value, the best size to find is often how it looks best when worn depending on the size and shape of a woman's hand.
